Today in class we did the following:

1. Vocabulary words 1 - 20

2. Read Island of the Blue Dolphins

3. Homework: Vocabulary words 1 -20  x 3, defs x 1, 5 sentences





1) gnawed: wore away by persistent chewing

2) headland: a point of very high land that juts out into water

3) kelp: a kind of large, brown seaweed

4) lair: the place where a wild animal lives

5) ravine: a small narrow steep-sided valley with steep sides

6) shellfish: an animal that has a shell and lives in the water

7) sinew: a tough cord that connects muscles to bones

8) coast: the land near a shore 

9) paint: to create art using a brush

10) faint: difficult to see because it is faded or light in color 

11) willow: a tree characterized by drooping branches that sway easily in the wind

12) feast: an elaborate and usually abundant meal often accompanied by a ceremony or entertainment

13) arrow: a shape that is pointed to show direction; a pointed stick used as a weapon  

14) maintain: to take care of or keep a certain way

15) appeal: to arouse a sympathetic response

16) speech: a usually public discourse

17) needle: a small pointed tool used for sewing

18) crease: a fold that is often marked by a line

19) bowling: any of several games in which balls are rolled on a green or down an alley at an object or group of objects

20) wheat: a plant or grain that can produce bread, flour, pastas, and other baked goods
